States on consciousness Flashcards
3 states of consciousness?
Sleep, wake, altered states
Altered states-
Temporary change in someone’s normal mental state without being considered unconscious
spontaneous states-
daydreaming, drowsiness, dreaming
physiologically induced states of consciousness-
hallucinations, orgasm, food or oxygen starvation

Circadian rythem
biological clock
NREM1 sleep
Last 1-10 min; lightly asleep; BP slows; asleep but may feel as if u never slept
Hypnic jerk
(Hypnogogic hallucination); reflex during rem1
NREM2 sleep
Last 20min; slower HR; prep for deep sleep; larger waves emitted; Harder to wake up; lightly sleep
NREM3 sleep
Starts 35-40 min after falling asleep; waves slow down n become larger; disoriented when woke up
REM (rapid eye movement) sleep
Final stage; last 10 min; after sleeping for at least 90 min; eyes move rapidly; powerful dreams; increased BP; rythems may become irregular; stages get longer as the night goes by, last REM stage can last an hour
alpha waves
Relaxed, daydreaming
beta waves
Conscious
Delta waves
Unconscious
Suprachiasmatic Nucleus SCN
Pair of cell clusters in hypothalamus that helps adjust melatonin hormone from pineal gland and controls Circadian Rythem
