states of matter Flashcards
which materials on earth are placed in 3 groups
solids, liquids and gas
property of a solid?
- have a fixed shape, cannot flow
- they have particles which cannot move from place to place
- they cannot be compressed or squashed
examples of solid
steel, plastic, wood are solids at room temperature
ice is a solid water
particles in a solid have the following charactertics
- they are close together
- have a regular pattern
- held together by strong forces called bonds
- cannot move from place to place
properties of gases?
they flow and completely fill their container
(why - because the particles can move quickly in all directions)
they can be compressed or squashed (why: because particles are far apart and have space to move into)
examples of gases:
air, helium, chlorine are gases at room temperature
water vapour is water as a gas
particles in gas:
- far apart
- arranged in a random way
particles in a gas can:
move quickly in all directions
properties of liquid:
- they flow and take the shape of their container
- (why: the particles can move around each other)
- they cannot be compressed or squashed (why: the particles are close togetther and have no space to move)
examples of liquid:
- mercury, lemonade, water are liquids at room temperature
- particles in a liquid are close together and arranged in a random way, and can move around each other
what is matter?
is the scientific word used to describe all the different substances and materials found on the earth
what does raising the temperature cause?
- it causes the solids to change to liquids
- liquids to change to gases
- cooling a gas will eventually change into liquid
- if cooling is continued, this will change solid in to
temperature at sea level?
boils upto 100 c
thermal energy?
solids that are metals are good at transferring thermal energy. We say they are good conductors
what are all materials made up of?
they are made of tiny particles called atoms
