States of matter Flashcards
Compression
Compression, decrease in volume of any object or substance resulting from squeezing the object
Melting
Solid changing to a liquid by heating
Boiling
A liquid changing to a gas by heating it
Evaporation
It’s the process of a substance in a liquid state changing to a gaseous state due to an increase in temperature
Condensation
Process in which a gas changes into a liquid by the process of cooling
Freezing
Process of solidification. In other words when a liquid turns into a solid by the process of cooling
Sublimation
Process in which when heating a solid turns to a gas without directly going through the liquid phase.
Brownian Motion
The erratic movement of particles in a gas or liquid, as a result of continuous bombardment from molecules of the surrounding meduim.
Difffusion
Movement of particles from a high to a low concentration .
Intermoleculer Forces
Forces between molecules
Melting Point
Temperature at which a solid turns to a liquid
Boiling Point
Temperature at which a liquid turns to a gas
Density
Density is the mass per unit volume
Mass
Is the measurement of how many atoms a substance contains
Vacuum
Space which contains no particles
Reactants
Starting materials in a chemical reaction
Products
The substances that are made in a chemical reaction
Conservation of mass
The total mass of products at the end of the reaction is equal to the total mass of the reactants at the beginning. This is because no atoms are created or destroyed during chemical reactions.
