States of Matter Flashcards
What is the kinetic particle theory?
It explains the properties of the different states of matter.
Solids properties:
Close together Regular pattern Fixed position Can't flow (particles can't move) Can't be compressed/squashed (no space to move to- too close together)
Liquids properties:
Close together
Random pattern
Move around each other
Flow & take shape of container (can move)
Can’t be compressed/squashed (no space to move to- too close together)
Gases properties:
Far apart
Random pattern
Move quickly in any direction
Flow & fill container (can move fast in all directions
Can be compressed/squashed (far apart- space to move into)
What is conduction?
The transfer of heat in direct contact with each other. e.g. metals (good conductor)
What is convection?
The transfer of heat within a fluid due to hotter and less dense material to rise and colder more dense material to sink.
What is a poor conductor called?
An insulator.
Why does a fluid become less dense when it is heated?
When a fluid is heated the particles expand and moving apart, causing the fluid to become less dense.
What 3 things can increase the rate of evaporation?
- If the temperature of the liquid increased
- If the surface area is increased
- Temperature of the surroundings increased
What 2 things can increase the rate of condensation?
- Temperature of the object
2. Surface area
