states of matter Flashcards
What are the 4 different states of matter?
Solids, liquids, gases and plasma
What is a solid?
They have a very definite shape that can’t be changed, take up a fixed amount of space and are not able to be compressed.
What is a liquid?
The shape changes to that of the container in which its kept, they take up a fixed amount of space and can be poured.
What are gases?
They spread out and will only stay in an enclosed area and they take up all of the available space. This is called diffusion. They can be compressed.
What is diffusion?
Diffusion is when the particles of one substance spread throughout the particle of another. Only possible in liquids and gases.
How do you measure matter?
The amount of space taken up by a substance is called volume. It is measured in cubic m/cm/mm for solids and for liquids it is mL.
What is fluid?
A substance that flows.
What is a melting point?
It is the temperature at which a substance changes from solid to liquid.
What is a boiling point?
It is the temperature at which a substance quickly changes from liquid to gas.
What is melting?
The change of state from a solid to liquid.
What is evaporation?
It is when a liquid changes to gas, if it is under 100 degrees it forms water vapour, over 100n degrees it forms steam.
What is freezing?
The change of state from liquid tom solid, or when heat is transferred away from it.
What is condensing?
Happens when gas comes into contact with a cold surface.
What is boiling?
When a liquid changes to gas really quickly, it forms bubbles and heat.
What is sublimation?
When a solid changes to gas
