States Of Matter Flashcards
What is liquids’ density?
Quite dense
What is solids’ density?
Very dense
What is gas’ density?
Not dense
What is solids’ shape?
It has it’s own shape
What is liquids’ shape?
It takes the shape of the container
What is gas’ shape?
Takes the shape of the whole container
What is solids’ movement?
Cannot move stay where they are put
What is liquids ability to flow?
Can be poured
What is gas’ ability to flow?
Spreads out quickly
How does a solid turn into a liquid?
As we heat up the solid, the particles vibrate more quickly and the bonds weaken causing the solid to melt.
How does a liquid turn into a gas?
On heating, particles on the surface of the liquid gain enough energy to escape and form a gas. The liquid evaporates.
What is the difference between boiling and evaporating?
Boiling is a rapid process and requires heat. Evaporation does not. Evaporation occurs when particles on the top of the liquid gain enough energy to break the bonds. Evaporation happens at any temperature. Boiling only happens when the liquid is boiling
What is it called when a solid turns straight into a gas?
Sublimation

What is the valency of hydroxide?
