states of matter Flashcards
Element-
A pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by ordinary chemical means.
Compound-
A substance made up of atoms of more than one element.
Molecule-
The smallest part of a substance that still has the properties of that substance.
Atom-
The smallest part of an element that still has the properties of that element.
Density-
The amount of mass present in a given volume.
Volume-
The amount of space occupied by matter.
Chemical Formula-
The chemical symbols and numbers indicating the numbers of atoms contained in the basic unit of a substance.
Mass-
The amount of matter in a substance.
Periodic Table
What does it represent?
organizes all discovered chemical elements in rows (called periods) and columns (called groups) according to increasing atomic number.
Solid-
A state of matter with a definite shape and a definite volume.
Liquid-
A state of matter with a definite volume and no definite shape.
Gas-
A state of matter with no definite volume and no definite shape.
Know the freezing and boiling points of water in degrees Celsius.
