States of matter Flashcards
Solid
One of the states of matter, its molecules are tightly compacted and can only vibrate.
Liquid
Liquid has molecules that role over each other and take the form of its container
Gas
Gas molecules move continuously at high speed in all directions, its molecules are widely spaced.
fusion
when a solid becomes a liquid
solidification
when a liquid turns into a solid
vaporisation
when water evaporates and becomes a gas
liquidifation
when you compress gas so strongly that it becomes liquid
sublimation
when a solid becomes a gas like when ice evaporates
condensation
when a gas turns into a solid
like mist freezing on windows
melting
is the transition from solid to liquid state.
Example: letting an ice cube melt.
Boiling
is a deep-seated phenomenon. The entire liquid is heated, and
bubbles form inside the liquid. Each substance has its own boiling
temperature. Examples: pure water has a boiling point of 100°C, alcohol
78°C, at standard atmospheric pressure.
evaporation
evaporation is basically the same thing as vaporisation however is a surface phenomenon where liquid evaporates on contact with air.
