States Of Matter Flashcards
Matter
Anything that occupies space and has mass
Mass
Is the amount of matter in an object
Properties of solids
Have definite shape
Have definite volume
Have definite volume
Cannot be compressed
Cannot flow
Properties of liquid
Have no definite shape, have a definite volume, cannot be compressed and can flow.
Properties of gases
Jane no definite shape , no definite volume, can be compressed and can flow.
Energy
For a substance to change state it needs heat energy. As it changes state it uses latent heat. There is no change in temperature, but the state of the material changes.
The melting point
This is when both liquid and solid exist together.
Boiling point
This is when liquid begins to evaporate
Condensation
This is the changing of gas to liquid
Diffusion
Is the movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration e.g. the spread of perfume around a room.
Sublimation
Some substances don’t change from solid to liquid when they melt , they change straight from solid to gas e.g. solid carbon dioxide is known as dry ice and turns into gas when heated.
Plasma
Plasma is the fourth state of matter. It’s like gas except it can conduct electricity. Plasma is a gas that can carry electric charge. Plasma particles spread out and move around randomly.
