States of Matter Flashcards
During what process does a substance’s particles change from a liquid to a solid
Freezing
During what process does a substance’s particles change from a solid to a liquid?
Melting
During what two processes does a substance’s particles change from a liquid to a gas?
Boiling and evaporation
During what process does a substance’s particles change from a gas to a liquid?
Condensation
During what process does a substance’s particles change from a solid to a gas?
Sublimation
What causes matter to change from one state to another?
absorbing and releasing of heat
Which state of matter takes the shape of the container it is placed in?
Liquid
Which state of matter fills the container that it is placed in?
Gas
At what temperature does water boil (degrees Celsius and Fahrenheit)?
100 degrees Celsius or 212 degrees Fahrenheit
At what temperature does water freeze (degrees Celsius and Fahrenheit)?
0 degrees Celsius or 32 degrees Fahrenheit
Water can change between states. For example, solid to a liquid. When water changes states, is
that a physical or a chemical change? Explain why.
Physical change-there is no chemical change that occurs-whether it is ice or in liquid form it is still
water (made up of the same molecules)
If an object sinks in a beaker of water is it more dense or less dense than water?
More dense-particles or molecules are closely packed together (water the particles are moving
more freely therefore they are less dense)
What is a mixture and a solution?
- mixture- a combination of two or more substances that DO NOT form a new substance;
- solution- a mixture with one substance spread out so evenly that you cannot tell the two
substances apart
List two examples of both a mixture and a solution.
- Mixture:
i. Trail Mix
ii. Different colored lego - Solution:
i. Lemonade
ii. Coca-Cola
What does it mean if an object is buoyant?
It means that the object can float, because buoyancy is the upward push of a liquid or gas on an
object
What are some properties of matter? List at least 5.
- Mass
- Volume
- density
- temperature
- magnetism
17.What is a physical change?
- physical change-a change in size, shape, or state of matter that does not change a
substances composition
What is a chemical change?
- chemical change- any change that creates a new substance by altering the chemical
makeup of a compound. Evidence of this type of change could be in temperature, light,
heat, or sound given off, and the formation of gasses
List three examples of both a chemical change and physical change.
- Physical:
o breaking glass
o evaporating water
o painting a wall
o making lemonade - Chemical:
o a rusting bike
o baking cookies
o burning a piece of wood
o exploding fireworks
What is a solute and a solvent?
- Solute- a substance that is being dissolved into something else (sugar in lemonade)
- Solvent- the substance into which something is being dissolved it is doing the dissolving
(water in lemonade)
List which materials are the solute and solvent for the following drinks below.
- Lemonade: water, lemon juice, sugar
i. Solute: lemon juice and sugar
ii. Solvent: water - Coca-Cola: water, carbon dioxide, flavoring
i. Solute: carbon dioxide and flavoring
ii. Solvent: water
Matter
something that has mass and takes up space. It can be a solid, liquid, gas, or plasma.
Mass
the amount of matter inside of an object. It does not change based on gravity. It is
measured in grams.
Volume
the amount of space an object takes up
Solid
a state of matter with a definite shape and volume. The particles in solid are tightly packed
together in a regular pattern.
Liquid
a state of matter with a definite volume, but no definite shape. It takes the shape of the
container that it is in. The particles in a liquid are able to move and slide past one another, and are
not as tightly packed as a solid’s particles.
Gas
a state of matter that does not have a definite shape or volume. It will fill the area/container it
is placed in. The particles in a gas are very loose and are able to slide past one another freely with
lots of room.
Plasma
a very hot, gas-like state of matter that occurs naturally on the sun and other stars. It can
be produced/made in fluorescent lights and plasma TV’s
