States of matter Flashcards
what is chemistry?
the study of matter
what is the name of the particles that make up matter?
atoms, molecules and ions
how many main ideas are behind the particulate theory?
4
what are the main ideas behind the particulate theory
- All matter is composed of particles
- The particles are in constant motion
- The particles have empty spaces between them
- The particles are attracted to each other
what is matter
Anything that has mass and volume
what are the states of matter?
solid, liquid, and gas
what are the properties of solids?
they have a definite shape, definite volume, and strong forces of attraction
what are the properties of liquid?
they dont have a definite shape, they have definite volume, and moderate forces of attraction
what are the properties of gases?
No definite shape, no definite volume and weak forces of attraction
what are the particle arrangement and movement in a solid?
Particles in a solid are closely packed together, and will vibrate in their fixed position
what are the particle arrangement and movement in liquid?
particles have small spaces between them and are randomly arranged, and particles move slowly past each other
what are the particle arrangement and movement in a gas
particles have large spaces between them and are randomly arranged, and move around freely and rapidly
what is the brownian motion
The random, zigzagging movements of small particles in a suspended fluid
