States of Matter Flashcards
What are the three states of matter?
Solids
Liquids
Gases
They are all the same particles with…
Different arrangements and energy
Solids :
Have strong forces of attraction between the particle
Held tightly in a fixed regular arrangement.
Solids do not have much energy
so they vibrate against each other.
Liquids:
Have weaker forces of attraction than solids.
Particles are close together but they can move past each other to create an irregular arrangement.
They have more energy than solids.
They travel in random directions at low speeds.
Gases:
No forces of attraction between particles.
They have a lot of energy and travel at high speeds in random directions.
The density of Solids, Liquids, and Gases
Solids are the most dense as their particles are held tightly together
The flow of Solids, Liquids, and Gases
Solids can’t move or flow but liquids and gases can as the particles can move past each other
What state of matter can be compressed?
Gas: reducing the distance between particles
