States Of Matter Flashcards
Dissolving
The mixing of a solid with a liquid to make a solution
Mixture
Two or more substances that are next to each other but are not chemically bonded
Saturated
A solution containing the maximum quantity of solute that it can hold
Soluble
A substance that can be dissolved in a solvent
Solubility
A measure of how much solvent can dissolve the solution at a given temperature
Solute
Solid that dissolves in a solvent to make a solution
Solvent
The liquid in which a solid dissolves to make a solution
How is a solution formed?
When solute dissolves in solvent
Sublimation
When a solid turns straight to a gas
(No liquid stage)
What is depostion?
When a gas turns staight into a solid
(No liquid stage)
Pure substance
A substance that has one definite melting point
(Fixed melting point)
Impure substance
Substance that does not have a definite melting point , it will melt over a range of temperatures
Pure
A substance made of one element or compound
Impure
A substance of two or more other substances mixed in

How does solid get to liquid
Melt
How does liquid get to gas
Boiling
How does gas get to liquid
Condensing
How does liquid get to solid?
Freezing
Heating curve
How the temperature changes, as a substance is heated up
Separtating insoluble solids from a liquid
Filteration
Separating soluble solid from liquid
Evaporation
3 processes in Distillation
- evaporating
- condensing
- collecting
What is chromatography used for
To separate substances, distinguish pure/impure substances
Why does the mixture get separated?
The more soluble substances in the mixture spread along the papaer faster. The father of the dye travels up the chromatogram the more soluble it is
