States of Matter Flashcards
Melting
When a substance changes from a solid to a liquid
Vaporization
When a substance changes from a liquid to a gas
Boiling
Vaporization of the entire liquid to a gas.
Ex: a pot is put on a stove and using fire, the water turns into steam
Evaporation
Vaporization of the particles near the surface.
Ex: when the sun vaporizes the water near the surface of the ocean
Sublimation
The change from solid to gas.
Ex: dry ice changes from solid to gas (experiment in classroom)
Condensation
The process of gas changing to a liquid.
Ex: on a hot summer’s day there is water on a glass cup due to the humidity in the air and the water particles condensing on the cup
Freezing
When a liquid changes to a solid
Ex: Ice cubes on the ice tray freeze
Deposition
When a gas changes directly from a gas to solid
Amorphous Solid
When the atoms in a solid are not arranged in a regular repeating pattern
Ex: plastic, glass, rubber
Crystalline Solid
When the molecules are arranged in a repeating pattern
Ex: quartz, salt, sugar
Melting Point
The temperature when a solid turns into a liquid
Boiling Point
The temperature at when a liquid turns into a gas
Condensing Point
The process of which a gas changes into a liquid
Freezing point
The process when a liquid freezes into a solid
What happens when heat (thermal energy) is added to a substance
The molecules will have more kinetic energy the more heat is added. They will move faster and start vibrating more. Will also change into the next phase (solid, liquid, gas)
