States of matter-1 Flashcards
What is a melting point?
A melting point is a temperature at which a solid turns into a liquid.
What’s a freezing point?
A freezing point is a temperature at which a liquid turns into a solid.
What is common between freezing and melting points?
The melting and boiling points of any substance will be the same. For example, water’s melting & boiling points are 0 °C.
What is evaporation when and why does it occur?
Evaporation only occurs on the surface of a liquid and only when exposed to the air. The hotter a liquid, the faster it evaporates.
What is a boiling point?
A boiling point is a temperature at which a liquid becomes hot enough to form a gas inside itself. This temperature is known as the boiling point.
What is volatility?
Volatility is how fast a liquid evaporates.
What is a pure substance?
A pure substance only contains one element and has a precise melting & boiling point.
What do impurities do to elements?
Impurities affect the melting & boiling points of elements.
Whats a lattice?
A lattice is a regular 3D arrangement of atoms.
What are the main points in the kinetic particle theory?
- All matter is made up of particles, such as atoms, molecules and ions.
- The higher the temperature, the higher the energy of the particles.
- The more often the particles around us hit walls and collide with themselves, the higher the pressure is.
What is the space between particles called?
The space between particles is called intermolecular space.
