The remains of the first state house are now incorporated into the Charleston County Courthouse

Why did they need to build a third (our current) state house?
As seen, plaster and firewood were highly flammable, we wanted our state house to be safe, the second house was also too small for the growth of the city.
When did who decide to build the 3rd and current state house?
In 1850, the general assembly made the decision to build the new state house
Where is the second state house commemorated on the grounds?
Outside of the west wing, there is a head stone marking where the second state house lie
When was the second state house destroyed, how?
The second state house was burnt down Feb. 17, 1865 (along with 1/3 of the city) by Sherman and his troops during the civil war
When and how was the first state house destroyed?
In 1788 a fire started in the senate chambers, burning the first state house down.
Why did they want to move the state capitol from Charleston to Columbia? (3 main reasons)
-Charleston was far, Columbia is a more central location for legislators to travel to
-Columbia had more rivers and waterways for trade
-Columbia would be a fresh start, this would be the first city created with intent to be a state capitol
What is most of the building constructed of?
Blue granite (our state stone), from quarries nearby the Congaree river
Where is the marble from that makes up the floors?
The white marble is from Elberton, Georgia (the “granite capitol of the world”) and the Pink and Grey are from Tennessee
Where is the brick from?
Red clay brick made in Columbia
The columns on the front portico are what?
Monolithic (built from a singular piece of granite), each one is about 32 tons, they are the largest monolithic columns on a public building in the US.
Through what time period was the 3rd state house built?
They began in 1855, finished in 1907. 52 years (52 stairs)
What do the 6 bronze stars represent?
During the war when Sherman and his troops came through, they shot 10 cannon balls from near the Congaree. 6 of the cannon balls hit the unfinished state house.
How many columns are on the front portico?
22 (blue granite)

When were the first and only major renovations to be made to the current SH?
1990s
What were the three main projects of the 90s renovations for the lower lobby?
-painting the brick white to create more light flow on the lower level
-removing the two large mahogany doors that blocked off each of the wings
-adding white marble tile to the wings

Why will gov. Henry McMaster be significant?
He took over two years of Nikki Haleys term when she went to the federal gov’t, allowing him to serve for 10 years when he finishes his 2 full terms.

The staircases are made of cast iron, the gold detail is yellow jessamine, our state flower.
