State Exam Flashcards
Lists three scale forming compounds and type of scale (hard, soft, and insoluble
Calcium, magnesium, silica. Hard, soft, and insoluble
True or false. A synchroscope compares the generator waveform to the grids waveform by measuring the fase angle between the two,
True
What are some causes of pitting and corrosion ?
Acid, high alkalinity and oxygen
How do you determine super heater safety valve ?
Super heater safety valve must discharge all steam it can generate with out going over 6% of MAWP. If super heater can be isolated safety valve have capacity of 6 pounds for each square foot of super heater heating surface. It must blow first to maintain flow through.
During rounds of a large generating station you notice the thrusy bearing temperature has increased from its normal temoerature of 130F to 145F. All other parts of turbine seem normal . Isthere a problem? What do you do?
Check oil lube level, check oil lube oil quality, increase cooling water flow
How do you adjust radial clearnance on a turbine.
Need to remove journal and have multipe shims, adjust clearance, measure, reattach journal bearing
A flue gas analysis showed 15% co2 and 5% o2 by volume what is the excess air?
o2/.263-o2
.05/.263-.05=23.4%
The DPSuses 3% o2 as 15% excess air
so 5%=1.67x15=25%
5/3=1.67
What are the symbols in ohms law repesent ? E=IR
E= voltage I= Curent R= resistance
What pressure is a blank cover plate good to (in place during hydro) The dimensions and strenth of plate was given
the formular is to solve T-D/CP/S
Explain a zeolite softner process?
The purpose of a sodium zeolite water softner is to remove scale forming calcium and magnesium ions and replace them with non-scale forming ions. It operates by passing the incomming water through zeolite bed charged with sodium ions which removes calcium and magnesium ions in the water.
What is an accumulation test and when should it be preformed?
It is a way of calculating the reliving capacity of the safety valve.
under full firing conditions, feedwater shutoff stop valves closed except for neccesary aux equipment
What is the maxium carbon that can be in boiler pressure parts ?
0.35%
When steam passes through a PRV what happens to the temperature, pressure, entropy, enthalpy, and super heat?
Temp goes down, enthalpy the same, pressure reduced, entropy increases, super heat increases
What flue gas are measured to control pollution instead of combustion?
SO2, NOX
Name the parts of make up a large surface condencer?
Exhaust nozzle, shell, water box, tube sheet, reinforcement plates, tubes, hotwell
Name sever causes of turbine vibrations?
critical speed, broken eroded or coroded blades, bent shaft, water comming over with steam, internal rubbing, worn thrust bearing, incorrect clearance, over heating due to cooling lube
What is a gland water seal how does it work?
The water seal consists of an impeller on the turbine shaft which rotates in water filled casting and water thrown out from impeller forms a leak proof water barrier. Water seals are mainly applied to LP glands to guard against air leaking in. They do not operate properly at low speeds,
What is specific heat of steam, oil, air ?
steam .50, oil .40 to .47, and air .24
How do you know when a shell and tube feedwater heater is leaking in the tubes?
Rise in conductive increase in water usage
What is heading on state log?
I i the Engineer log book heading, type of boiler, allowable working pressure, safety valve setting, and date engineers fills in date , time in, time out, reviewed operators state log, notes of boiler and turbine operations as well as repairs and or visits by insurance or state inspections, along with signature and license number.
In the operators log book heading address, type of boiler, allowable working pressure, safety valve setting, and date. Operator fills in date, time, continous blowdown, safety valve manual test. aux equipment checked, boiler ignition verified, boiler room cleaned, internal conditions if opened, operator notes, signature and license number.
What is active and inactive pitting?
Active is still taking place and is shiney, inactive pitting took place in the past
What is a dummy micrometer used for ?
It is used for measuring the clearance in steam turbine.
What is the purpose of sentinel valve ?
Asentinel valve is use on small turbine to warn the operator of problem, most likely backpressure.
What is plastic refractory and where is it used?
Used around the burner through and curved areas, Used to protect the furnace walls.
