Offenders are given authorisation to commit atrocities from those in higher status role

Occurs when the target is not seen as an equal to the offenders; makes it easier to harm them

Authorisation: Order to kill came from hitler; kill or to be killed
Dehumanisation: in camps, prisoners were numbered, given uniforms, shaved heads
However: theory takes responsibility away from the perpetrators - giving them a victim status
