Stasimon 2 Flashcards
Chorus have changed support
Seem to have change support due to treatment of Creon and seem to think of Oedipus as a tyrant, they have heard events that make it seem likely that he is indeed the killer of Laius, they have heard Jocasta dismiss a prophecy of Apollo (not just Tiresias). They are anxious and try to distance themselves from the king
What do they evoke
they Evoke the laws created by the gods
Song to Destiny, guide them always
Great Laws born for heaven, Olympian sky their only father
PRide
Pride breeds the tyrant “violent pride, gorging, crammed to bursting”
“Clawing” up to the heights and then crashes down the abyss
Strife
Healthy strife that makes the city strong
“I pray that god will never end that wrestling”
“God, my champion, I will never let you go” (seems like they are addressing Oedipus and their early reverence of him)
If there is no reverence for the gods or holy things
If a man with no fear of justice, no reverence for the temples of the gods, let him be torn down by a rough doom, repay his pride
if he can’t restrain himself from outrage-mad, laying hands on the holy things untouchable (the incestuous marriage)
If such a man can save his life from God
“Why join the sacred dance?”if a such a man can save his life from God, if such violence goes with honor now
What will they do if these prophecies don’t come true
I won’t ever go reverent to Delphi again
Or other shrines/oracles
Unless these prophecies all come true
They believe prophecy is decaying
The old oracles sent to Laius are dying
Nowhere Apollo’s glory
The gods go down.
