Stars, Aparent & Absolute Distance, Doppler Shift Flashcards
How do scientists use parallax to measure the distance of nearby objects in space?
by measuring parallax angles and using geometry
What is the stages a sun will go through in it’s life?
Planetary nebula->main sequence->giant->white dwarf
Describe the HR diagram
Plot the color and absolute magnitude of stars, the larger the absolute magnitude the smaller the luminosity
Describe sun in relation to HR diagram
Average temp average luminosity yellow star in middle of diagram
Apparent magnitude?
Lower “m”
a Stars distance based on its intrinsic brightness
what the distance seems
Absolute magnitude?
Upper “M”
Actual distance
Stars further than ____ parsecs away from Earth have __ more negative than __
10
M
m
How do stars form?
In the planetary nebula, cloud collapse, gas and dust
How does mass effect evolution?
Lower mass stars live longer
High mass end up as black holes or neutron stars
Low mass are white dwarves
What is the Doppler shift?
If the object is moving away from earth its spectrical lines are shifted towards red end of spectrum to a longer wavelength if it’s moving toward earth the spectrical lines will be shifted toward the blue end of the spectrum to a shorter wavelength
How do scientists know the universe is expanding?
Doppler shift
Define Milky Way and where earth is located
It’s a spiral galaxy that contains the solar system
. O If that's the center earth is locate towards the upper center edge
What is the Big Bang theory?
The universe started from one point billions of years ago and has been expanding ever since
3 types of galaxies?
Spiral
Elliptical
Irregular
What did Hubble contribute?
All galaxies in the universe are moving away from us
