starch, glycogen and cellulose Flashcards
what type of saccharide is starch
polysaccharide
what is starch’s structure
a chain of alpha glucose monosaccharides
what is the main role of starch
energy source
is starch affected by water?
no, they are insoluble so water is not drawn into the cell by osmosis. it does not diffuse out of cells
where can starch be found?
in plants and in small grains.
never in animals
where is glycogen found
in animals and small bacteria
what is glycogen’s structure
very similar to starch but has shorter chains.
what are glycogens often referred to as?
“animal starch”
where are glycogens found in animals?
mainly in muscles and the liver
what qualities do glycogens have?
they’re insoluble and are compact
what is cellulose made from?
beta glucose
what is cellulose’s structure
straight and unbranched. they run parallel to each other slowing hydrogen bonds to form.
