Starch Flashcards
What is the aim of the experiment?
To test for starch in substances using iodine solution
What is the hypothesis?
Starch will cause an iodine solution to turn from a yellow to a blue-black color when present in a substance
What is a positive test for starch?
If iodine is added to starch, the iodine changes from a yellow-brown to a blue-black. This is a positive test for starch
What is a negative test for starch?
Substances that do not contain starch, will not change the color of the iodine. this is a negative test for starch
What color did the chalk solution take on?
The iodine solutions color which is a yellow/brown color
What is the control of the experiment?
The chalk solution
What color did the starch solution turn?
Blue/black.
What have you learnt form this experiment?
Iodine solution changes form a yellow color to a blue/black color in the presence of starch. The color change in iodine can be used to test plant organs and foods for the presence of starch.
Explain the term polysaccharide?
It is a carbohydrate built up of numerous monosaccharide molecules joined together
What plant organelle is starch stored in?
Amyloplasts
What characteristic of starch makes it a good storage compound?
It is insoluble in water
