Starch Flashcards
What are the three polysaccharides?
Starch , glycogen and cellulose
What is the main role of starch?
Energy scource in many parts of plants
How is starch stored?
As small grains that are compact so can be stored in small spaces
What is the structure of starch?
-Can be branched or unbranched
-made of chains a glucose monosaccharides that a joined by glycosidic bonds through a condensation reaction
Where are the OH groups on a starch molecule?
-point inwards on an a glucose molecule to form hydrogen bonds to keep the helix structure
Is starch insoluble or soluble in water?
Starch is insoluble in water so the water potential remains unaffected by osmosis
Why is starch good in relation to respiration?
Starch can be hydrolysed into a glucose molecules which can be transported quickly for use of respiration
How do enzymes act on starch?
Glucose molecules are released quickly as the unbranched form has many ends that enzymes can act on simultaneously
