star formation and life cycle Flashcards

1
Q

formation of a star

A

dust and gas particles will slowly come together due to gravitational attraction between atoms. the inward movement of material is known as gravitational COLLAPSE

Q

becoming a protostar

A

as gravitational force pulls more and more matter together work is done on the gas and dust leading to an increase in kinetic energy which results in an increase in temperature. Then the core becomes hot enough to glow and this Is called a protostar

Q

nuclear fusion

A

nuclear fusion will occur when the temperature and pressure of the star becomes too great. The fusion of hydrogen is when it goes from a hydrogen nuclei to a helium nuclei.

Q

main sequence star

A

this is when the radiation pressure and gas pressure is in equilibrium with the gravitational force acting inwards.

Q

low mass stars

A

if the star is less the 1.4 times the mass of the sun it will become a red giant before Turning into a white dwarf

Q

red giant

A

when most of the hydrogen has being fused into helium nucleus fusion will stop. which means there won’t bean external force of radiation to counteract the inwards gravitational force. the core will contract. the hydrogen around the core will become very hot. the outer layers expand to cover a greater volume than the original star, cooling and leading to a red giant
