Staphylococci Overview Flashcards
Staphylococcus spp. gram stain
GPC in clusters
Staphylococcus spp. key characteristics
Catalase pos. Fermentative, Resistant to bacitracin
S. aureus gram stain
GPC in clusters
S. aureus key characteristics
Coagulase pos., Ferments mannitol (yellow colonies on mannitol salt agar). Usually DNase & ther- monuclease pos.
S. aureus pathogenicity
Causes suppurative cutaneous infec- tions, toxic shock syndrome, food poisoning
Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) gram stain
GPC in clusters
Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) key characteristics
Coagulase neg. Grow on mannitol salt agar but don’t ferment mannitol. Sensitive to novobiocin.
Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) pathogenicity
Common cause of hospital- acquired UTI
S. saprophyticus gram stain
GPC in clusters
S. saprophyticus key characteristics
Coagulase neg. Resistant to novobiocin. May ferment mannitol.
S. saprophyticus PATHOGENICITY
UTI in young sexually active females, urethritis & prostatitis in males
Micrococcus gram stain
Large GPC in pairs, tetrads (predominant arrangement), clusters
Micrococcus key characteristics
Catalase pos. Coagulase neg. Oxidase pos. Susceptible to bacitracin. Resistant to furazolidone & lysostaphin.
Micrococcus pathogenicity
Usually nonpathgenic. Found in environment & on skin, mucous membranes, oropharynx
