What are the primary clinical infections associated with Staphylococcus epidermidis and why are these infections often difficult to treat?
Staphylococcus epidermidis is predominantly associated with nosocomial (hospital-acquired) infections, particularly infections of indwelling medical devices like catheters, prosthetic heart valves, and CSF shunts. These infections can be difficult to treat due to the organism’s ability to form biofilms and its increasing resistance to antibiotics.
