Q

Standing Waves

A

When transverse waves pulse reaches a rigid or fixed surface, the reflected wave is inverted. Crests are reflected as troughs and vice versa.

Due to Newtons third law: the string applies a force to the wall, which applies and equal and opposite force to the string.

Q

Standing Wave - Occur

A

Standing waves occur when two waves of the same amplitude and frequency are travelling in the opposite directions toward each other in the same string.

Standing Waves - Nodes

A

Nodes are points on the standing wave, where two waves constantly cancel each other out, complete destructive interference occurs and the rope remains still.

Standing Waves - Antinodes

A

Where complete constructive interference occurs, the string oscillates with maximum amplitude. -> Create a larger amplitude.

Q

The simplest standing wave or Fundamental frequency

A

The simplest standing wave has just one antinode. Its frequency is referred to as the fundamental frequency.

Waves with frequencies that are integer multiples of the fundamental frequencies are called Harmonics. Together they form harmonic series.

Context: The second harmonic is called the first overtone.
