British coloumbia - when can they not refract?

A

-anyone under 19year or is 65 years or old
-has not had at least one eye health exam since turning 19
-if the patient is 40 years or older and has not had at least one eye health since turning 40
-hisotry of glaucoma, retinal detachment etc..
-has a rx containing prism
-refracive error exceeds plus or minus 6
-diabetes / hypertension
-recent head trauma
-injury or pain occuring to eye w/in 3 months

BC - corrective lenses must not be dispensed in any of which circumstances?

A

-there has been a change in refractive error exceeding +/-1.00 in either eye within 6 months OR +/- 2.00 in either eye since the date of the most recent prescription or assessment record
-the best corrected VA will be less than 20/25 in either eye
-the px is not satisfied with the best corrected vision after 2 refractions

A

-All professionals practicing opticinary in the province of Alberta are required to be licensed by COA
-The COA is the regulatory body that oversees the licensing and practice of opticinary in the province
-Self-regulated body mandated by legislation to protect the public interest

A

-If an optician intends to refract, they must apply to the COA
-An optician must ensure that they have the appropriate equipment to preform refraction

Referrals for COA

A

-An optician must use their professional judgement to assess any indication or complication that arises during a refraction for a referral to another regulated health professional
-This includes determining whether a stand-alone refraction is appropriate based on a pxs history and any additional indications that arrise during the refraction

Prescriber signatures - COA

A

-An optician must ensure all prescrptions generated for use in preparing eyeglasses, CL, devices are signed by a lawful prescriber and made available to the px
-Even if no dispening occurs at the time of refraction we need to store in px record
