Characterized by the interstate highway system; a limited-access highway with grade separated interchanges; primary function is to move vehicles between cities and across urban areas
Freeway
Usually a multilane, divided highway with controlled access; not all interchanges
will be grade separated, and some direct property access is provided; usual means of controlling access is by a boundary road that collects traffic at the side and moves it to selected access points
Expressway
Major intercity streets; provide direct property access at their boundaries but on-street parking is usually not permitted; traffic control is accomplished by signalized intersections
Arterial streets
Neighborhood streets; pick up the traffic from local streets and
transfer it to arterial streets; traffic control will usually by provided by stop signs on the side streets and on-street parking may be permitted
Collector streets
Short streets that discourage through traffic; provide direct access to residential properties and permit on-street parking
Local streets
