Standards Flashcards
What is taxonomy?
The scientific study of naming, classifying and defining groups of organisms based on shared characteristics
What is the hierarchy of taxa?
Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species
Dear King Philipp came over from great spain
What is binomial nomenclature?
The system of naming organisms in which two terms are used to denote a species
What are rules of a genus and species
- genus is capitalized
- genus can be abbreviated
Why are binomial names used?
Because they are in latin, it is a dead language which doesnt change and is universal.
What are the 3 domains of life?
Eubacteria
Archaea
Eukaryota
Which domains reproduce asexually?
All three, Eukaryota is usually sexual
Which domain has a unique metabolism?
Eubacteria
Which domains are unicellular?
Arachaea and Eubacteria
Differentiate the types of chromosomes between the 3 domains
Single and circular:
Eubacteria, Archaea
Multiple and linear:
Eubacteria
What are all the kingdoms of life?
Eubacteria, Archaea, Protista, Plantae. Fungi, Animalia
All of which kingdoms are autotrophic?
Eubacteria, Protista, Fungi, Animalia
What kingdom are algae in?
Protista
What kingdoms have only a cell wall?
Animalia, Eubacteria, Protista
Name the different plant phyla.
Angiospermophyta, Filicinophyta, Coniferophyta, Bryophyta
Explain what types of leaves all the plant phyla have.
Angiospermophyta: variety
Filicinophyta: fronds
Coniferophyta: needles
Bryophyta: simple
Explain what types of stems all the plant phyla have.
Angiospermophyta: woody trunks/herbacious
Filicinophyta: underground
Coniferophyta: woody trunk
Bryophyta: simple
What type of stems do conifers have?
Shallow and not extensive
What type of roots do angiospermophyta have?
Tap and fiborous
What type of roots to mosses have?
They do not have any, they have rhizoids
Reproductive structures of all the plant phyla
Angiospermophyta: Seeds in fruit
Filicinophyta: naked seeds
Coniferophyta: spores
Bryophyta: spores
Name all of the animal phyla.
Porifera, Platyhelminthes, Anellida, Mollusca, Arthropoda, Chordata, Cnidaria
