Describe Informed Consent
What ethical principal is it based off of?
- This is the moral, ethical and legal obligation of the healthcare provider
- This needs to be done before all procedures where there are risks
- Based on the principle of patient autonomy
What are the consequences of not obtaining informed consent?
- Battery: the unlawful touching of patients without their consent
- Negligence: failure to provided the SOC by not informing patient properly on the the risks and benefits of a procedure
What three conditions must be met in order to provide informed consent?
- Capacity and competence
- Clear information about risks, benefits and alternative treatments
- Voluntary consent without coercion or manimpulation
Does being under the influence of substances including sedative medications impact ones capacity to provide informed consent?
Yes
What is under the legal standard for consent “Reasonable Person Standard”
Discolusre of anything a reasonable person may ask or woiuld want to know to make an informed decision
Assume all patients have what level of vocabulary/reading level when providing informed consent?
5th grade level
Are medical recommendations considered coersion?
No, as long as you are acting in good faith to help a patient make a decision with the patient’s goals in in mind
Legally is written consent just as binding as verbal consent?
Yes
Written consent is easier to prove
Can a patient waive their right to informed consent to a surrogate?
Yes, if they would like for another person to make the decision for them and they have the ability to make informed consent
When are some times that informed consent is not needed?
- Emergencies -unconscious patient
- Unable to consent - minor or legally incompetent
- Waiver of consent
- Public health risk - to prevent disease and risk to population
- Therapeutic privilege- not getting informed consent due to concerns that it would cause serious harm
What is included in the basic components of contact isolation?
- Gloves
- Fluid impervious gown
- Handwashing
What patients get put on contact isolation?
- Used for aptients with illness transmitted by contact or can be passed by fomites
- Often patients that have fluid with high baceral load
What is the single best way to prevent and reduce infections?
Proper handwashing
What is included in droplet isolation?
- Surgical mask within 3-feet
- Handwashing
What is the sequence for putting on PPE?
- Gown
- Mask or respirator
- Goggles or face sheild
- Gloves
