Standard deviation Flashcards
If the data is smaller, then the values will be___?
Closer to the average
If the data is larger, then the values will be___?
More spread out / further from the average
Step 1 -
Calculate the mean
ex. 6,7,8,9 = 7.5
Step 2 -
Calculate the difference of each number from the mean
ex. (6 - 7.5) + (7 - 7.5) + (8 - 7.5) + (9 - 7.5) = (-1.5) + (-0.5) + 0.5 + 1.5
Step 3 -
Calculate the variant by squaring all of the differences and then averaging the result
ex. (-1.5)^2 + (-0.5)^2 + (0.5)^2 + (1.5)^2 = 2.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 2.25 = 5/4 = 1.25
Step 4 -
Calculate the standard deviation by taking the square root of the variance
ex. square root of 1.25 = 1.12
What is the mean of these numbers? - 5, 7, 8, 10, 11
8.2
In which step do you calculate the difference from the mean?
step 2
True or False:
When the data is larger, the values are closer to the average
false; the data would be further away from the average
True or False:
To calculate the standard deviation, you have to square the variance.
false; you have to take the square root of the variance
