Q

how did Stalin’s initial position in the party give him power

A

due to being general secretary he was responsible for the day to day running of the party.

this meant he had personal files on all party members which he used the secret police to watch

he decided the agenda for party meetings so he could restrict topics

Lenin enrolment meant more people joined the party and Stalin took advantage as they had no political experience so they would allege loyalty if Stalin helped them

Stalin appointed supporters in key positions and he removed those who opposed him e.g Molotov

as he had no personality he could do all this unnoticed

Q

how did Stalin control the party

A

he controlled the party, political institutions had no power.

politburo met only 9 times a year

power was in sub-groups outside the politburo (so Stalin had more control)

Stalin attended important meetings where h would walk around the room when others spoke to intimidate others not to disagree with Stalin

16
Q

name some of the limitations of Stalin’s power

A

Stalin couldn’t control every issue due to size so focused on key issues

politburo did oppose some of stalin acitions e.g Stalin wanted Ryutin executed but he was sent to labour camp, seconf 5 year plan targets lowered (but minor)

Party members actually wanted industrialisation and Stalin gave it to them, Stalin may not have ordered purges at local level as determined by local pressure

17
Q

how did Stalin’s power over the party change during WW2, 1941-1945

A

admin was taken over by state of defence committee

military co-ordinated by supreme command

use of terror reduced

generals and ex party members released to use their expertise

propaganda increased Stalin’s power, emerged as a hero to soviet people.

18
Q

what happened after WW2

A

High Stalinism 1945-53

19
Q

what did High Stalinism contain

A

Stalin power in decline and could only control via terror and intrigue

terror was reenforced e.g Church concessions withdrawn

Cult of personality gave façade of power but Stalin was getting so relied on political scheming to maintain power

politburo renamed to presidium to bring new comers who didn’t associated with Beria who Stalin saw as threat

doctors plot used to try and eliminate Beria didn’t work as Stalin died

(basically didn’t have same power to eliminate opponents as he did at the start as supporters of opponents couldn’t be removed)
