Gram variability (cause)

A

In old cultures peptidoglycan layer shrinks (clostridium / some bacillus) - bacillus endospore also appear gram neg due to capsule In some species cells wall can break off during division to give a false negative because no peptidoglycan remains (propionibacterium / corynebacterium)
