Stags And Hens Flashcards
Who was stags and hens by
Willy Russell
Where is it set
In a trashy 70’s disco in Liverpool
What is the synopsis
The play is mainly based in and around the night club toilets where a hen and stag do are gossiping about the events of the evening.
What both party’s don’t realise is that the hen and stag parties are held at the same club and that Linda (the bride to be)’s ex- boyfriend is playing at the club as well.
The stag and hen party have to work together to keep Linda from running away with Peter the day before the wedding, as well as trying to wake and so er up the groom
What’s the significance of my character
This scene shows her personality traits quite well as you see her really trying to entertain her friend and make sure she persuaded her that what she did was hilarious and not mean.
Bernadette seems to need all the attention on her and she seems a little unsettled playing second fiddle to the bride at this hen party so it makes sense that she tries to almost steel the attention back.
As well as all this though- Bernadette is a very modern and independent woman which is rather a head of its time, being that the play is set in the 70’s.
She seems to represent the early stages of feminism quite well as although she believes in all the marriage superstitions the hens gossip about to try and mild Linda into their society’s idea of a perfect she also speaks her own mind and is very opinionated which is quite refreshing to see
What occurs before, during and after my scene
My scene is the first in act two, but before the interval we see that all the hens are still none the wiser able ur the stags being there, but Eddie (the best man) has just seen them
In my scene, we see her gossiping to carol in the toilets about a certain encounter she had on the dance floor with a rather small man
NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS AFTER!!!!
What’s the subtext
Bernadette wants to support Linda but also needs a bit of attention back for herself as she may be feeling a bit like an old married woman at the hen as she is the only woman there that has a man, though she boasts that she wouldn’t find it hard finding another one in the club and doesn’t seem to tied down when talking to the girls
But this does seem a bit like empty threats and I think she is a lot happier with her man than she let’s off as she doesn’t want to seem different from the rest of them
Willy Russell notes
Stags and hens is like most of Russell’s plays and is set in Liverpool in the 1970’s and Discusses the working class society throughout England for examples the : intellect, life, party habits and exclusion of the different

My monologue is a combination of both
