What are three advantages of proscenium arch staging?
There is an orchestra pit, as it is a musical, live music is essential.
Allows for characters to directly address the audience and break fourth wall.
The audience form the 4th wall, so they are onlookers to the story they are being presented with.
What are three disadvantages of proscenium arch staging?
The audience remain onlookers, due to seating structure they can’t become more intimate with the action.
Not everyone may be able to see and hear.
Set can only work from 2D angles.
What are the advantages to traverse staging?
Acting more naturalistic due to having to turn your back.
Allows to create actor audience relationship, intensity is easier to create as all on one level.
Stage could be on same level as stage.
What are the disadvantages to traverse staging?
Limited exits and entrances for actors.
Movement can be artificial for the actors as they keep moving to ensure they don’t have their back to the audience for a long period of time.
Limitation of set design and props.

Audience see performance from a range of angles.
Engagement with audience more natural.
Audience feel part of action – Closer to tension and action and direct address.
What are the disadvantages of in the round?
No wings as such, limited exits and entrances for actors.
Any set changes have to happen in front of the audience.

Levels cannot be used eg balcony for the narrator, limitation of set design and props.
Difficult to block out areas of the stage.
