Stages of Pregnancy/Development (Fertilization, Implantation, Gastrulation, Neurulation, Gestation, Parturition, Lactation) Flashcards
Stages of Pregnancy
Fertilization (Where, What?)
Fertilization creates a Zygote in the Fallopian Tube.
Cleavage (Two regions?)
Cellular Division where a 16 cell morula turns into a Blastocyst. Trophoblast and Inner Cell Mass.
Implantation (Where, What?)
Occurs on the Endometrium where enzymes secreted by Trophoblast digest blood vessels and tissues. Blastocyst eventually embeds.
Gastrulation (What?)
Process of forming three layers.
Neurulation (What, When?)
Process of Skeleton (Notochord) and Nervous System (Neural Tube) forming during the third week of development.
Gestation (What?)
Process of development in womb.
Parturition (What, When?)
Hormonal changes trigger uterine contractions. Oxytocin levels rise.
Lactation (What?)
Estrogen and Progesterone prepare breasts for milk. Prolactin stimulates glands. Prolactin is stimulated by suckling.
