What are the 5 stages of CLA?
pre verbal, holophrastic, two word, telegraphic, post telegraphic
What 3 noises are made in the pre-verbal stage?
crying, cooing and babbling
When does cooing start?
At around 2 months of age.
What is cooing?
It resembles the vowel and consonant sounds in spoken language.
At what age does babbling start?
6 months.
What are the two types of babbling?
Reduplicated and variegated.
What is reduplicated babbling?
The repetition of the same sound. (E.g. ‘bababa’)
What is variegated babbling?
It involves variation in the consonant and vowel sounds being made. (E.g ‘daba’)
When does the holophrastic stage usually start?
Between 12 and 18 months.
What is the holophrastic stage?
When children use individual words to communicate.
When are first words usually spoken?
Around the child’s first birthday.
What are common first words?
mummy, daddy, or some form of concrete noun.
When does the two word stage begin?
Around 18 months.
What is the two word stage?
When a child puts 2 words together to convey meaning.
What do children start to understand in the two word stage?
Grammar.
What is the vocabulary spurt?
When children realise that everything around them has a name & they gain ‘naming insight’. They move from slow lexical development to a period of more rapid acquisition.
When does the telegraphic stage start?
Around age 2.
What is the telegraphic stage?
Child begins to make longer and more complete utterances.
What does telegraphic speech involve & omit?
Involves key content words and omits grammatical words.
What are grammatical words?
Words that are required for structural accuracy but not for conveying meaning.
When does the post-telegraphic stage occur?
Around age 3.
What is the post telegraphic stage?
Where a child’s speech becomes increasingly like an adults.
What appears in a child’s speech when they reach the post-telegraphic stage?
Grammatical words.
What is a child usually doing by age 4?
Speaking almost like an adult (grammatically accurate, complete sentences)
What stage is this child in?
‘Daddy bye-bye’
Two word stage.
What stage is this child in?
‘We going to the park’
Telegraphic.
What stage is this child in?
‘I don’t like this pasta’
Post telegraphic.
