Stages of Food Procduct Development Flashcards
Concept Generation
What is this?
This is the ‘thinking stage’ - when all ideas are considered for the new food product.
Ideas may be developed from market research, identifying the gap in the market (They will do this so their product is different and unique).
Concept Screening
What is this?
During this stage all the ideas that were considered in concept generation are examined; some are kept and some are discarded.
This information will then be used to produce a specification that will enable the new food product to be developed.
Prototype production
What is this?
This is when a sample (prototype) of the new food product is developed.
The prototype is tested and can be modified/adapted.
Product Testing
What is this?
This is when sensory testing is carried out to get the target group of consumers’ opinions.
Changes can still be made to the new food product to fit the likes and dislikes of their target group.
First Production Run
What is this?
The new food product is then trailed in the factory for the first time to check it can be manufactured in bulk.
Marketing Plan
What is this?
This is when the marketing team will plan how to ensure the new food product sells as well as possible. They will consider the 4P’s;
Product: how will the new product be packaged?
Place: where will the new food product be sold?
Price: what will it cost consumers?
Promotion: will there be any offers to attract consumers?
Product Launch
What is this?
Consumers can now buy the new food product; sales of the new food product will be monitored closely.
