What is the first stage called and when does it take place
Asocial attachments, 0-6 weeks old
What happens in the first stage
Babies respond in a similar way to animate or inanimate objects
Near the end they respond more to a smiling face

Indiscriminate, 2-6 months old
What happens in stage 2
Babies prefer human company to inanimate objects
Distinguish between familiar and unfamiliar people
Easily comforted by anyone - no stranger anxiety
Enjoy being with people
What is stage 3 and when does it take place
Specific attachments, 7-8 months old
What takes place in stage 3
SEPARATION ANXIETY- distress when one person puts them down and joy when reunited with that person (their PRIMARY ATTACHMENT FIGURE)
Stranger anxiety develops
65% of attachments to mother, 30% mother is joint
What is stage 4 called and when does it take place
Multiple attachments, 8+ months old
What happens in stage 4
Starting to build multiple attachments e.g. dads, grandparent etc - secondary attachments
