Stages of Anesthesia Flashcards
Stage 1
First breath of vapor/anesthesia to loss of consciousness. Normal regular rate/depth respirations, voluntary control of eye movements, normal reactive pupils, no reflexes lost, normal muscle tone
Stage 2
Excitation/delirium stage. From LOC –> unresponsive to painful stimuli. irregular respirations. Larygneal reflexes present/salivation present, vomiting reflex MOST active bottom of this stage. Laryngospasm risk! Lash reflex lost. Brisk/divergent eye movement. Pupils small, brisk light reaction. MAY be dilated right before vomiting but will remain reactive to light. HTN/tachycardia.
Stage 3
Surgical Anesthesia - TRUE anesthesia!
Stage 3 Plane 1
(light): regular respirations (large volume). Less divergent eye movement but still present. Pupils small, brisk light reaction.
Stage 3 Plane 2
(moderate): regular respirations, conjunctival reflex lost. Now eyes are fixed/central no more divergent eye movement. Still pupils small, brisk light reaction.
Stage 3 Plane 3
ICS weaken and lag, breathing taken over by diaphragm. Corneal reflex lost. Pupils larger/reaction to light less. Laryngeal reflex/salivation disappear well into 3rd plane –> diagram shows into 4th plane
Stage 3 Plane 4
breathing taken over by diaphragm, regular, shallow, jerky. Pupils continue to dilate/sluggish to light.
Stage 4
Overdose – impending respiratory failure/death from overdose. Apnea. Fully dilated/unresponsive pupils. Flaccid skeletal muscles.
