7 months
What age does the holophrastic stage start?
1 - 1.5 years
What age does the two word stage start?
1.5 - 2 years
What age does the telegraphic stage start?
2 - 2.5 years
What is babbling?
- Children explore sounds through production.
- sounds of early babbling are universal
- by the time of 8 months babbling will will only occur with sounds of their native language
What are the two types of babbling?
Reduplicated babbling = repeating the same sound
Non-reduplicated babbling = using different sounds when babbling
What occurs in the holophrastic stage?
Children begin to acquire/produce real words into their native languages, meant to convey full sentences however are often extremely redundant.
What are the three functions in the holophrastic stage?
- express emotion
- request a direction
- name objects
What often accompanies words in the holophrastic stage?
Pointing/ hand gestures
What happens during the two-word stage?
Children begin to understand word order.
What is intonation and when does it occur?
Pitch change, it occurs in the two word stage
What happens during the telegraph stage?
Children experience a vocabulary spurt.
How do children communicate in the telegraphic stage?
Usually in ‘pidgin English’ and with content words
