Modern horses. How do they live?
diet is minimal roughage/high energy food twice daily
confined to stable or sml area (intensive)
often kept alone/little social interaction
List the 5 freedoms of animal welfare
- Freedom from hunger or thirst
- freedom from discomfort
- freedom from pain, injury or disease
- freedom to express normal behaviour
- freedom from fear & distress
A little about stabling requirements/considerations?
Bedding (dusty, absorbency, odour control)
Ventilation (DPI requires cross ventilation)
Lighting
Social contact (freedom 4) shld be able to see/smell others
Water
entertainment (toys to prevent vices)
thermoregulation
Care to consider with stabled horse?
Needs more grooming then non-stabled as cant remove dirt etc
Excersise management
