Stable Earth Flashcards
What are seismic waves
Shock waves from earthquakes
Detected by seismometers and recorded on seismographs
How can seismic waves provide evidence for the structure of the earth
P waves pass through earth and are refracted by the core helping scientists to find the size. They travel through solids and liquids
S waves won’t be detected on the opposite side of earth to an earthquake so we know there is liquid in their path (core)
S waves only pass through solid
What are p-waves
What do they travel through
Which way do they vibrate
PRIMARY
Longitudinal,travel through SOLIDS AND LIQUIDS
Vibrates the same way wave travels
Quicker than s-waves
What are s-waves
What do they travel through
Which way do they vibrate
SECONDARY
Transverse, travels only through SOLIDS
Vibrate right angles to wave direction
Slower than p-waves
Ultraviolet radiation can cause
Early skin ageing
Sunburn or skin cancer
Cataracts in eyes of old
Sunscreen is effective at reducing damage caused by ultraviolet radiation. The higher the factor, the lower the risk
By wearing factor three, how many times longer than the recommended time can you stay out?
Three times longer than recommended time
In England 20 minutes is advised so by wearing factor three you can stay out for an hour
Ozone is
Gas found naturally high in Earths atmosphere
Prevents too much UV rays reaching Earth
Becoming thinner near south pole
Predicted the layer will repair itself
Where are ClouroFlouroCarbons found
Factories
Aerosols
Old fridges
Why are dark skinned people at less risk of ultraviolet radiation
Dark skin absorbs more radiation so less reaches the underlying body tissue
Their skin contains more melanin so this will absorb the ultraviolet
