Why was Edwards age an issue?
- previous young kings had been deposed/killed/caused civil war
- vacuum of power for position of providing support for Edward
- Somerset LP initially from Regency Council but overthrown in factional conflict w/ Northumberland
Why was Mary Tudors gender an issue?
- females seen as weak -> cannot lead army into battle or control strong factions
- expected to marry, so subject to influence of potential foreign monarch

Problems under Somerset
- war w/ Scotland, financial difficulties
- alienated Privy Council by ignoring them -> faction of Paget, Dudley, Wriothesley
- failure to deal w/ rebellions, retreated to Hampton Court + removed Oct ‘49

- dealt w/ rebellion in 1549 + plotted w/ reformist Cranmer to gain power
- LP Feb 1550
- increased council to 33 + used parl’t , did not ignore them

Married Philip Jul. 1554 to maintain good relationship on Paget’s advice
