Stability & Change Flashcards

1
Q

Define stability

A

Stability refers to the ability to maintain or support systems and processes continuously over time. Steady conditions with a continuous supply of rainfall and sunlight, combined with warm temperatures have ensured stability for many ecosystems.

Q

What does the structural and functional stability of an ecosystem depend on? Outline the 5 major factors

A

Nutrient cycling without leakages, individual species (esp keystone) must have high genetic diversity so populations can survive selection pressures, climate variables (eg precipitation) within tolerance limits, absence of disruptions which would interfere with sustainability, steady supply of energy
