STAAR Review Flashcards
Prokaryote
Has no nucleus or membrane-bound organelles. Only bacteria are prokaryotic.
Synthesize
To make, to create
Glucose
Energy source for respiration; produced by photosynthesis
Vacuole
Stores water in the cell
Ribosome
site of protein synthesis, makes proteins
Homeostasis
Maintaining a constant internal balance. Processes like cell transport, the cell membrane, and certain body systems maintain homeostasis.
ATP
Adenosine Triphosphate. Usable energy produced by respiration. More is produced in Aerobic respiration than Anaerobic.
Cell membrane
Maintains homeostasis by letting certain things in and out of the cell.
Selectively Permeable
The cell membrane only lets certain things through
Active Transport
Cellular Transport that moves materials against the concentration gradient (from high to low concentration)
Mitochondria
Uses energy in the bonds of glucose to produce usable ATP energy
HIV
Destroys white blood cells which fight disease. If it is not treated people die from other diseases because they can’t fight them off.
Virus
a nonliving pathogen that reproduces by hijacking (taking over) the host cells machinery.
Membrane Bound Organelles
The parts of the cell that include a membrane. This includes a nucleus, mitochondria, vacuole, golgi, ERs
Virus Projections
Used for attachment- to gain entry into the host
