Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors
What are the names of SSRI
Paroxetine, sertraline, citalopram , escitalopram, Fluoxetine, Fluvoxamine
How do they work
inhibits seretonin reuptake allowing more seretonin to stay at the juncyion of the neurons
What is the half life of SSRI
has a long life long effective half life a time frame of up to 4 weeks is necessary to produce therapeutic medication levels
Paroxetine
is used for generalized anxiety disorders panic disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder social anxiety disorders and trauma dissociative disorders depressive disorders
In the first few days what side effects are seen with this medication
first few days and weeks : nausea diaphoresis tremor fatigue and drowsiness advise clients to report but they will soon subside
What are the later effects of this medication :
after 5 - 6 weeks there is sexual dysfunction impotence delayed or delayed orgasm delayed or absent ejaculation decreased sexual interest
side effects with this medication
wieght gain advise clients to follow a well balanced diet
Gi bleed
medications cause GI bleed use cautiously in clients who have HX of GI bleed advise clients to state black tary stool or cofee ground emesis
What is the electrolyte effected by this med that the nurse should watch out for
hyponatremia ….. more likely in older adult clients monitor serum potassium levels.
Serotonin syndrome
is a complication of this medication , s/s are agitation and confusion disorientation difficulty concentrating anxiety hallucinations , spastic jerky muscle movements tremors fevers diaphoresis
Bruxism
grinding and clenching of the teeth usually during sleep
What do you treat Bruxism with
Buspirone
withdrawl sundrome
is a complication of this medication : nausea sensory disturbances anxiety tremor malaise unease
to avoid withdrawl
advise Pt to taper dose , don,t discontinue medication ubruptly
postural hypotension
medication complication , monitor pt to change positions slowly
