Atlas
A book of maps
Political Maps
Maps that show boundaries of states and nations, as well as cities and towns.
Physical Maps
Maps that show natural features of the Earth (mountains, rivers, plateaus and lakes)
Latitude
Imaginary lines that run horizontally around the world parallel to the equator (East to West)
Longitude
Imaginary lines that run at right angles to the equator and meet at the poles. (North to South)
Coordinates
The numbers of latitudes and longitudes that describe the exact location of a specific place.
Degrees
A unit for measuring angles. Latitude and longitude are measured in degrees.
Compass
An instrument used to find direction. It is drawn on a map for orientation.
Cardinal directions
The four main directions of north, South, East and West.
Intermediate directions
Directions located between the Cardinal directions. Northeast, Southeast, Northwest and Southwest.
Equator
The imaginary line of 0 degree latitude that splits the Earth into 2 equal halves. West to East.
Tropic of Cancer
23.5 degree North latitude
Tropic of Capricorn
23.5 degree South latitude
Prime Meridian
0 degree longitude. Passes from the North Pole to the South pole, passing through Greenwich, England.
Arctic Circle
66.5 degree North latitude
