The Alien Acts
- This act allowed the president to kick out any foreigner (Alien) ruled as
dangerous to the country.
Democratic-Republicans
- This was a political party that favored strong state governments and a
smaller national government. The party was led by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, and
they preferred a strong partnership with France and rule by the common people.
The Embargo Act
- This act was issued by Jefferson to avoid involving the U.S. in war with
France and Britain. It prohibited U.S. ships from leaving U.S. ports and trading with any foreign
nation.
The Era of Good Feelings
- The period of James Monroe’s presidency earned this nickname.
There was only one political party, and the war with Britain had ended.
Excise Tax -
An excise tax is a tax from the government on a specific good or service.
The Farewell Address -
This was Washington’s last speech as president where he warned the US
to stay neutral, avoid alliances with other countries, and not to form political parties.
Federalists -
This was a political party that supported a strong federal government. First led by
Alexander Hamilton, the Federalists also favored a government ruled by the upper class and a
strong partnership with the British.
George Washington -
Best known as the first American president, Washington was also a
military general, a founding father, and a slaveholder.
Impressment -
The act of forcing a person to serve in the army or navy. This tactic was
commonly use by the British against American sailors.
James Madison -
He was the 4th president, a founding father, and leader in the drafting of the
Constitution. Madison was also a slaveholder.
James Monroe -
Monroe was president during the “Era of Good Feelings.” He issued the Monroe
Doctrine, and he was president during the Missouri Compromise.
John Adams -
Adams was the first vice president and the second president. He was a member of
the Federalist Party.
John Marshall -
He was an early Chief Justice and established judicial review. He was involved
with important cases such as Marbury v Madison, Gibbons v.. Ogden, and McCulloch v Maryland.
Judicial Review -
This means that the Supreme Court has the right to determine whether laws
passed by Congress are constitutional.
